Delhi's Cold Wave Intensifies: Temperature Plummets to Season's Lowest at 5.8°C
Delhi records season's lowest temperature of 5.8°C

The national capital woke up to its coldest morning of the season on Monday, with residents grappling with an intense cold wave that has gripped the city. The mercury plunged to a chilling 5.8 degrees Celsius, marking the lowest temperature recorded so far this winter.

Record Low Temperatures and Disruptive Fog

According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Safdarjung observatory, which serves as the official marker for Delhi, registered the season's low of 5.8°C. Other areas across the city experienced even sharper cold. The Ridge area recorded 5.4°C, while the sports complex at Akshardham saw the temperature drop to a frigid 4.8 degrees Celsius.

The severe cold was accompanied by dense fog, which significantly reduced visibility and disrupted daily life. The foggy conditions impacted road and rail traffic, leading to delays and cautionary advisories for commuters. The IMD had previously forecasted these cold wave conditions, citing the influence of dry northwesterly winds prevailing over the plains of North India.

A Silver Lining: Marginal Improvement in Air Quality

Amid the biting cold, there was a slight reprieve on the air pollution front. The air quality in Delhi showed a marginal improvement, settling in the 'Poor' category as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 256, which, while still unhealthy, is better than the 'Very Poor' levels witnessed in recent days.

Meteorologists attribute this slight improvement to an increase in wind speed, which aids in the dispersion of pollutants. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, as calm wind conditions forecasted for the coming days could lead to the accumulation of pollutants once again.

Forecast and Advisories for Delhi Residents

The IMD predicts that the cold wave conditions are likely to persist for the next few days. Shallow to moderate fog is also expected in the mornings. The minimum temperature is forecasted to hover around 6-7 degrees Celsius, with the maximum likely to be near 20 degrees Celsius.

Authorities have issued advisories urging citizens, especially the elderly, children, and those with health conditions, to take necessary precautions:

  • Wear warm, layered clothing to protect against the cold.
  • Limit early morning and late evening outdoor exposure.
  • Use masks to mitigate the effects of poor air quality when outdoors.
  • Drivers are advised to use fog lights and drive cautiously in low-visibility conditions.

The combination of low temperatures and fluctuating air quality continues to pose a dual challenge for Delhi, with agencies advising vigilance until weather conditions show a significant change.
