Delhi-NCR Sees GRAP Restrictions Revoked Amid Improved Air Quality

Officials announced on Monday that all restrictions imposed under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the Delhi-National Capital Region have been lifted following a significant enhancement in air quality. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) attributed this positive change to favorable meteorological conditions, which led to a recorded Air Quality Index (AQI) of 119 for Delhi, placing it in the moderate category.

Forecast Predicts Continued Moderate Air Quality

An official statement highlighted that forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) indicate the AQI is likely to remain in the moderate range in the coming days. This optimistic projection supported the decision to revoke the GRAP-1 restrictions, which had been in effect since an order issued on October 14, 2025.

Specific Curbs Lifted with Revocation

The removal of GRAP-1 restrictions means several environmental curbs are no longer applicable. These include a ban on using coal and firewood as fuel in tandoors at hotels, restaurants, and open eateries, as well as restrictions on diesel generator usage, which are now permitted only in emergency or essential situations. This move aims to ease operational burdens on businesses while maintaining air quality standards.

Understanding GRAP Stages and Recent Implementation

GRAP consists of four stages, each triggered by specific AQI levels to combat pollution effectively. GRAP-1 is activated when the AQI ranges from 201 to 300, GRAP-2 from 301 to 400, GRAP-3 from 401 to 500, and GRAP-4 when the AQI exceeds 450. This year, GRAP-4 restrictions were implemented on January 17, but as air quality improved, lower stages were progressively invoked. GRAP-4 was revoked on January 20, followed by the lifting of GRAP-3 restrictions two days later, and GRAP-2 measures were removed on February 18, culminating in the current revocation of all restrictions.

The consistent improvement in air quality, driven by weather patterns and regulatory efforts, underscores a positive trend in pollution management for the region. Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely to ensure public health and environmental sustainability.
