The Delhi government has intensified its heatwave relief efforts by deploying mobile units and establishing cooling zones to assist approximately 2.65 lakh people across the national capital. As temperatures soar, these initiatives aim to provide immediate relief to residents, particularly those in vulnerable communities.
Mobile Units on the Move
Specially equipped mobile vans are now operating in high-density areas, offering cold water, oral rehydration solutions (ORS), and shaded resting areas. These units will rotate through different neighborhoods to maximize reach. Officials stated that the vans are also equipped with basic first-aid supplies to address heat-related illnesses.
Cooling Zones Established
In addition to mobile units, the government has set up cooling zones at public parks, bus stands, and metro stations. These zones feature misting fans, drinking water dispensers, and seating arrangements. The initiative targets areas with limited access to air-conditioned spaces, such as construction sites and slum clusters.
Targeting the Most Vulnerable
The relief measures are designed to protect daily wage laborers, street vendors, and the homeless, who are most exposed to extreme heat. The government has also issued advisories for employers to provide adequate breaks and hydration to outdoor workers. Health officials are monitoring hospitals for heatstroke cases and have stocked essential medicines.
Community Awareness Campaign
Alongside physical relief, the Delhi government has launched an awareness campaign through loudspeakers and pamphlets, educating citizens on recognizing heatstroke symptoms and staying hydrated. Special focus is on children and the elderly, who are at higher risk. The campaign urges people to avoid going out during peak afternoon hours and to use umbrellas or hats when outdoors.
These steps come as the India Meteorological Department predicts continued high temperatures for the region. The government assures that resources will be scaled up if the heatwave persists. Residents can locate the nearest cooling zone or mobile unit via a dedicated helpline and the Delhi government's website.
