Delhi Gripped by Intense Cold as IMD Issues Dense Fog Alert

The India Meteorological Department has issued a nowcast warning for very dense fog in Delhi, valid until 9:03 AM today. This alert comes as biting cold conditions tighten their grip on the national capital.

Record Low Temperatures in Delhi and Gurugram

On Wednesday, Lodhi Road in Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of just 3.6 degrees Celsius. The neighboring city of Gurugram experienced even colder conditions, with the mercury plunging to 3.5 degrees Celsius. These readings mark a significant drop from normal winter temperatures.

Red Alert for Dense Fog Across Multiple Zones

The IMD's red alert specifically warns of very low visibility due to dense fog. The weather office states that very dense fog is very likely to occur at many places over Central, North, North West, South, and South West Delhi within the next three hours.

The alert extends beyond immediate concerns. The IMD predicts dense fog conditions will persist over northwest India in the coming days. A cold wave alert has been issued for Delhi's neighboring states including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Extended Fog and Cold Wave Forecast

According to the latest weather bulletin from IMD, dense to very dense fog conditions are very likely to prevail during morning and night hours in isolated to some parts over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until January 16th. Dense fog in isolated pockets is expected to continue until January 19th, 2026.

Yellow Alert for Cold Wave Conditions

For January 15th, the weather agency forecasts a partly cloudy sky with cold wave conditions at isolated places. Moderate fog is expected at many locations, with dense fog likely at isolated places during morning hours.

Temperature Predictions for Delhi

The IMD predicts that minimum temperatures in Delhi will remain appreciably below normal, with deviations of around 3.1 to 5 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperatures are likely to be normal, deviating by approximately 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Specifically, the maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi are expected to range between 21°C to 23°C and 03°C to 05°C respectively. This indicates continued cold conditions despite some daytime warming.

Residents are advised to exercise caution due to reduced visibility from fog and to take necessary precautions against the cold wave conditions affecting the region.
