VISAKHAPATNAM: Coastal Andhra Pradesh reeled under the fury of severe cyclonic storm Mocha on Tuesday, with the extreme weather system claiming at least three lives and leaving a trail of destruction across multiple districts.
Heavy rainfall and powerful winds reaching speeds of 65-75 kmph battered the region, uprooting trees, damaging homes, and disrupting power supply in several areas. The cyclone's impact was particularly severe in Visakhapatnam, where emergency services worked through the night to clear debris and restore essential services.
Human Cost and Rescue Operations
Tragedy struck in separate incidents across the affected region. A 55-year-old woman lost her life when a wall collapsed in Visakhapatnam's Gajuwaka area, while a 45-year-old man was electrocuted in the city. Another casualty was reported from Srikakulam district, where high winds caused fatal injuries to a resident.
State disaster response forces have been deployed in full strength, with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams conducting rescue operations in the worst-hit areas. "Our teams are working round the clock to ensure public safety and provide immediate relief," stated a senior disaster management official.
Infrastructure and Agricultural Damage
The cyclone's wrath extended to critical infrastructure, with reports of:
- Widespread power outages affecting over 200 villages
- Damage to roads and communication networks
- Multiple flights diverted from Visakhapatnam airport
- Rail services disrupted on several routes
Agricultural sectors suffered significant losses as standing crops across thousands of acres were destroyed. Fishermen had been warned in advance, preventing major maritime tragedies, but several small boats sustained damage.
Weather Department Updates
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued timely warnings, accurately predicting the cyclone's path and intensity. "The system is likely to weaken into a depression over the next 24 hours," an IMD bulletin stated, offering some relief to the battered region.
State authorities have established relief camps in vulnerable areas and are coordinating with multiple agencies to accelerate recovery efforts. The state government has announced compensation for affected families and assured comprehensive support for rehabilitation.
