Agricultural Experts Sound Alarm on Climate Change Impacting Food Production
In a critical seminar held in Patna, leading agricultural scientists from across India convened to address the escalating threats posed by climate change to the nation's agricultural systems. The discussions centered on the disruptive effects of rising temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events, which are increasingly jeopardizing crop yields and overall food security.
Seminar Highlights Urgent Need for Climate-Resilient Strategies
The day-long event, titled 'Climate Change and Food Systems,' was jointly organized by Dr Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University (RPCAU) and the Bihar Agricultural Science Academy at Pusa, Samastipur. It served as a platform for experts, researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to brainstorm and formulate actionable recommendations aimed at mitigating climate impacts on agriculture.
Chief Guest S N Jha, Deputy Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), emphasized the immediate necessity to adopt climate-resilient agricultural practices. He stated, "Climate change poses a direct and severe threat to global food security. We must accelerate the development and implementation of climate-smart technologies to counteract adverse effects and ensure stable, reliable harvests for future generations."
Key Challenges and Proposed Solutions
RPCAU Vice-Chancellor P S Pandey, in his presidential address, highlighted the dual challenges of declining agricultural productivity and rising food demand. He pointed out, "Our farming systems are already under immense strain due to climate variability. Innovation is crucial in areas such as crop breeding, water management, and post-harvest techniques to adapt and sustain production levels."
Anjani Kumar Singh, a Senior Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute, advocated for a comprehensive approach. He stressed the importance of:
- Adopting climate-resilient crop varieties that can withstand extreme conditions.
- Implementing efficient water use practices to conserve resources.
- Promoting sustainable farming methods to reduce environmental impact.
Singh added that policy frameworks must be aligned with on-ground realities to build more robust and resilient food systems capable of withstanding climate shocks.
Formulation of Actionable Recommendations
Through a series of intensive brainstorming sessions, participants collaboratively developed a set of practical recommendations. These guidelines are expected to inform state and national policies focused on enhancing crop yields and ensuring food security for India's growing population. Experts expressed optimism that the seminar's outcomes will help chart a detailed roadmap for climate-resilient agricultural practices, particularly in eastern India, where farming is highly vulnerable to climate fluctuations.
The consensus among attendees was clear: proactive measures and strategic investments in climate-smart agriculture are essential to safeguard food production against the escalating threats of climate change, thereby securing a stable food supply for millions.
