Chennai Braces for Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Set to Soar Above 40°C

As election campaigns intensify across the region, Chennai and its suburbs are experiencing a significant rise in temperatures, signaling the onset of a potentially harsh summer. According to weather forecasts, temperatures are expected to hover around 36-37°C on Sunday, with a sharp increase anticipated after April 14, potentially breaching the 40°C mark by April 16.

Historical Data Points to Late-April Temperature Surges

Data from the Meenambakkam observatory, which monitors suburban conditions, reveals a consistent pattern of late-April temperature spikes over the past decade. Notable peaks include 40.8°C in 2016, 39.7°C in 2017, 39.2°C in 2019, 41.8°C in 2021, 39.7°C in 2023, and 39.6°C in 2024. Similarly, the Nungambakkam observatory, representing core city conditions, recorded highs of 40.8°C in 2016 and 41.2°C in 2021, with other years like 2017 and 2023 also showing significant second-half surges. The city's average maximum temperature in April stands at 34.7°C, but meteorologists warn that this year could exceed norms.

Meteorological Forecasts and Expert Insights

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast dry weather for Sunday, with maximum temperatures of 36-37°C and minimums around 27°C under partly cloudy skies. Daytime temperatures may remain 2-3°C above normal in isolated areas, extending to more regions on April 13 and 15. Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist at Skymet Weather, highlighted that the entire country might experience hotter conditions in the last ten days of April due to the absence of weather systems. He emphasized that even if temperatures hover around 38-39°C, rising humidity levels will significantly add to discomfort.

Bloggers and weather models indicate a sharper spike from April 16, with suburbs likely to breach the 40°C mark first, as they are already warmer than the core city due to delayed sea breeze arrivals. This trend could signal the onset of peak summer in May, with meteorologists forecasting at least six heatwave days during that month. Interior districts such as Vellore and Karur have already crossed 40°C, and Chennai's suburbs are expected to follow suit around mid-April.

Current Conditions and Broader Implications

On Saturday, Nungambakkam recorded 34.6°C and Meenambakkam 37.1°C, with humidity levels between 66% and 80% exacerbating the heat. Experts note that temperatures typically rise in the second half of April and peak through May and June as the sun moves northwards. This year, there is a heightened chance of heatwave conditions in May, posing risks to public health and daily activities.

The combination of high temperatures and humidity is expected to create challenging conditions for residents, especially during the ongoing election period. Authorities advise taking precautions against heat-related illnesses as the summer intensifies.
