BMC Initiates 'Vruksha Sanjeevani' Campaign for Tree Conservation in Mumbai
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the launch of the 'Vruksha Sanjeevani' campaign, a month-long initiative dedicated to the preservation and care of trees in public spaces across Mumbai. Scheduled to run from April 1 to April 30, this campaign aims to address various environmental challenges faced by the city's urban greenery.
Key Measures Under the Campaign
As part of the 'Vruksha Sanjeevani' drive, the BMC will implement several critical measures to ensure the health and longevity of trees. These include:
- Removing cement-concrete accumulations around tree bases and replacing them with loose red soil to improve aeration and root growth.
- Eliminating nails, advertisement boards, ropes, and cables that have been hammered or attached to tree trunks, which can cause damage and hinder growth.
- Pruning branches that obstruct pedestrian pathways, enhancing safety while maintaining tree health.
These actions are designed to mitigate common urban stressors on trees, promoting a healthier ecosystem in Mumbai's bustling public areas.
Scope and Impact of the Initiative
The campaign will focus on the extensive tree population within the BMC's jurisdiction, which totals 29,75,283 trees. By targeting public places such as parks, streets, and other communal spaces, the BMC aims to foster a greener and more sustainable urban environment. This initiative underscores the corporation's commitment to environmental stewardship and aligns with broader efforts to combat pollution and enhance the quality of life for Mumbai's residents.
Through the 'Vruksha Sanjeevani' campaign, the BMC seeks to raise awareness about the importance of tree conservation and encourage community participation in maintaining the city's natural assets. This proactive approach is expected to contribute significantly to Mumbai's ecological balance and urban aesthetics.
