Lucknow: Marking the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, the Gomti Task Force of the Territorial Army, in collaboration with the Lucknow Development Authority and Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation India, organised a comprehensive biodiversity awareness and wetland conservation programme at the CG City Wetland. The event witnessed active participation from students, local residents, and various environmental stakeholders, who engaged in a series of activities including awareness sessions, bird watching, and a clean-up drive. The campaign underscored the critical role of urban wetlands in maintaining ecological balance, providing habitat for wildlife, and enhancing urban resilience against environmental challenges.
Wetland Rejuvenation Initiative
Launched in November 2025, the CG City Wetland rejuvenation initiative has yielded significant ecological improvements. The site now supports an impressive 434 species, marking a substantial increase in biodiversity. The project aims to restore the wetland as a key biodiversity hub and a vital groundwater recharge zone. Through community participation and sustained conservation efforts, the initiative seeks to strengthen the ecological framework of the region and serve as a model for urban wetland restoration across the country.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The programme emphasised the importance of involving local communities in conservation activities. Participants were educated about the ecosystem services provided by wetlands, such as water purification, flood control, and carbon sequestration. The organisers plan to continue monitoring the wetland's health and conduct regular awareness drives to ensure long-term sustainability. The success of the CG City Wetland project highlights the potential for collaborative efforts between government agencies, non-profit organisations, and the public to achieve environmental goals.
