Destructive Storm Wreaks Havoc Across Assam, Leaving One Dead and Hundreds Homeless
A powerful and devastating storm swept through multiple regions of Assam on Monday night, resulting in significant destruction, the tragic death of a young man, and extensive damage to property and infrastructure. The violent weather event, characterized by intense winds and heavy rainfall, has prompted urgent warnings from meteorological authorities for continued severe conditions.
Tragic Incident in Chaygaon Claims Young Life
In a heartbreaking incident, Bhaskar Kalita, a 20-year-old youth, lost his life in the Pas-Gumi area of Chaygaon, located in Kamrup district near Guwahati. The tragedy occurred when a large tree was uprooted during the storm after midnight and fell on him while he was attending a Rongali Bihu cultural program at a pandal. According to local reports, the storm struck around 3 am on Tuesday, just as the event was concluding, with strong winds and thunder causing the pandal to be damaged. Bhaskar Kalita died on the spot, and at least two other individuals sustained injuries in the same incident, as confirmed by event organizers.
Widespread Impact Across the State
The massive storm, accompanied by heavy rain, lashed several parts of Assam, including the Barak Valley region and districts such as Goalpara and Bongaigaon. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued a storm report on Monday night, indicating that seven districts—Dhemaji, Bongaigaon, Golaghat, Charaideo, Lakhimpur, Sribhumi, and Darrang—were severely affected. The report detailed that 3,732 people across 11 revenue circles and 36 villages in these districts have been impacted by the disaster.
Property damage has been extensive, with eight houses fully destroyed and more than 600 houses partially damaged. Additionally, the storm affected 101.4 hectares of crop area in the last 24 hours, posing a threat to agricultural livelihoods. Infrastructure has also suffered, with 16 power department poles damaged in various districts, along with other installations and properties belonging to the health and education departments.
Meteorological Insights and Future Warnings
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), thunderstorms accompanied by squally or gusty winds with speeds ranging from 50 to 80 kmph prevailed at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya during the last 24 hours. Weather observations for the period ending at 8:30 am on Tuesday recorded extremely heavy rainfall of more than 21 cm at isolated places in Meghalaya, while heavy rainfall of 7 to 11 cm was noted at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD has issued a warning for Wednesday, forecasting that thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds reaching up to 50-60 kmph are very likely at isolated places over Assam. Furthermore, heavy rain is expected at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, indicating that the region may face continued weather-related challenges in the coming days.
