In a significant push for sustainable tourism, the Andhra Pradesh government has joined forces with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to launch a first-of-its-kind pilot project in the state. The initiative will deploy advanced Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) systems for climate control in the popular hill station of Araku, with work set to begin in January 2026.
A Green Blueprint for Araku's Tourist Infrastructure
The pilot project, a landmark for Andhra Pradesh, will encompass the complete cycle of design, installation, testing, and commissioning of ASHP technology. These systems will provide efficient water and space heating for key tourist facilities in Araku. Nestled near Visakhapatnam, Araku has cemented its status as a premier tourist draw in the state, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Its appeal lies in its chilly winters, where temperatures often dip below 10 degrees Celsius, and its pleasantly mild climate throughout the rest of the year.
The formal agreement for this collaborative venture was sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the recent CII Partnership Summit in Visakhapatnam. Officials explained that the technology is grounded in geothermal principles, utilising the stable temperatures found below the earth's surface to deliver eco-friendly heating and cooling solutions.
Substantial Environmental and Economic Benefits
The Araku ASHP initiative promises transformative advantages, positioning it as a model for sustainable development. Key projected benefits include:
- Annual energy savings of 50 to 70 percent compared to conventional systems.
- A reduction of roughly 300 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions each year.
- A long operational life exceeding 15 years with minimal maintenance needs.
- The use of environmentally safe, eco-friendly refrigerants.
A Strategic Step in AP's Tourism Roadmap
State Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh hailed the project as a historic milestone for Andhra Pradesh. He emphasised that the initiative marks a major stride towards offering cost-effective, high-quality tourism services while significantly enhancing the visitor experience in Araku. The project aligns with the AP Tourism Department's comprehensive five-point strategic plan, which focuses on long-term, inclusive, and environmentally responsible growth.
"The initiative planned in Araku is one such project which will have significant contributions to climate change mitigation," Minister Durgesh stated. Adding to this, Special Chief Secretary (Housing & Tourism) Ajay Jain highlighted the government's commitment to generating employment through tourism-led development. "For this, we are planning major infrastructure upgrades and hospitality expansion through projects like the Araku ASHP pilot," Jain said, noting the goal of creating at least 25,000 job opportunities for the youth in the coming years.
The project was also spotlighted during the National Energy Conservation Week (December 14-20). At an event connected to the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025, facilitated by the media advisers of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and EESL, Tourism Minister Durgesh and Special Chief Secretary Ajay Jain released an EESL poster showcasing Andhra Pradesh's energy efficiency endeavours.
