Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Launches Major Green Cover Project for Metro Corridors

In a significant move to enhance urban greenery, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved a substantial Rs 11.6 crore project dedicated to planting and maintaining 9,000 trees along the city's metro corridors. This initiative comes as a corrective measure following an oversight in previous green cover efforts, specifically the "Mission Million Trees" drive.

Addressing the Green Cover Gap

The "Mission Million Trees" campaign successfully planted an impressive 4 million saplings during the 2025 monsoon season. However, it inadvertently missed the open land adjacent to the metro routes. To bridge this gap, the AMC garden department has devised a specialized intervention scheduled for the winter and summer seasons of 2026.

Originally estimated at Rs 10 crore, the standing committee approved the proposal at a cost 11.50% above the base estimate. This increase is intended to ensure the proper establishment and long-term maintenance of the 9,000 trees, guaranteeing their survival and contribution to the city's environmental health.

Additional Infrastructure and Service Approvals

In the same meeting, the committee, chaired by the AMC administrator, also approved two major road resurfacing proposals for the eastern wards, with a combined value of Rs 75.7 crore. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Rs 36.23 crore for road works in Vastral, Viratnagar, and Bhaipura.
  • Rs 39.43 crore for road works in Indrapuri, Vatva, and Isanpur.

Both contracts were awarded to a single contractor at approximately 32% above the estimated costs, reflecting the scale and complexity of the projects.

Extensions and Payments for Civic Services

The committee addressed several administrative and service contracts to ensure continuity in civic operations:

  1. Contracts for agencies supplying a total of 155 sanitation supervisors were extended by one year. This extension was crucial as the current terms were set to expire on March 31, preventing any disruption in sanitation services.
  2. A payment of Rs 29.70 lakh was approved for three agencies responsible for preparing maintenance checklists for AMC-owned buildings, gardens, and properties. This step aims to enhance the upkeep and management of municipal assets.

These approvals underscore the AMC's multi-faceted approach to urban development, balancing environmental sustainability with essential infrastructure and service improvements. The focus on metro corridor greening is particularly noteworthy, as it integrates ecological goals with public transportation infrastructure, potentially improving air quality and urban aesthetics for commuters and residents alike.
