Ahmedabad Hits 41.8°C, IMD Warns of 42°C Sunday

Ahmedabad Endures Scorching Weekend as Temperatures Soar to 41.8°C

The weekend in Ahmedabad was dominated by an intense heatwave, with the city recording a blistering maximum temperature of 41.8 degrees Celsius this Saturday. This reading was a significant 2.2 degrees above the seasonal average, painting the city in shades of oppressive amber and forcing residents to seek refuge under neem trees or behind the hum of air conditioners.

IMD Issues Warning: Sunday Could Hit 42°C

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the worst may still be ahead. The forecast indicates that Sunday could see the mercury flirt with the 42°C mark, potentially setting a new peak for the month. Even nighttime offered little respite, with minimum temperatures settling at a sticky 26°C, which is 1.7 degrees higher than normal.

The IMD's Saturday forecast for Gujarat stated: "No large change in maximum temperatures during the next seven days is very likely over the region. Maximum temperatures are very likely to be above 40°C over isolated pockets of Gujarat region during the next four days." This persistent heat is attributed to a Western Disturbance trough and cyclonic circulation affecting northern India.

Statewide Heatwave: Rajkot Tops at 41.9°C

The heatwave extended across Gujarat, with Rajkot emerging as the hottest city in the state at 41.9°C. Other cities and towns experiencing severe temperatures included:

  • Amreli and Surendranagar at 41.7°C
  • Gandhinagar at 41.2°C

Despite the widespread heat, some areas may see temporary relief. The IMD predicts light to moderate showers in Chhota Udepur, Dahod, Mahisagar, Amreli, and Bhavnagar from Sunday to Tuesday. However, these showers are expected to be isolated and unlikely to significantly reduce the overall高温 conditions.

As the heatwave continues, authorities advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. The IMD will continue monitoring the situation and providing updates on temperature trends across the region.
