Ahmedabad Swelters as Temperatures Climb Above Seasonal Norms
The city of Ahmedabad experienced a significant spike in temperatures on Monday, with the mercury soaring to a maximum of 40.2 degrees Celsius and dipping to a minimum of 24.9 degrees Celsius. According to meteorological data, both the maximum and minimum readings were recorded at 0.6 degrees above the normal range for this time of year, signaling an intensifying heatwave across the region.
Impact of Western Disturbance and IMD Forecast
The elevated temperatures are attributed to the influence of a Western Disturbance, a weather system that has disrupted typical patterns. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating that the maximum temperature in Ahmedabad is likely to hover around 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, with no immediate relief in sight.
Upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan persisted into Monday morning, as detailed in the latest weather bulletin. This atmospheric condition is contributing to the sustained heat across Gujarat. The IMD's extended forecast predicts that maximum temperatures will remain largely unchanged over the next four days, followed by a gradual increase of 2-3 degrees Celsius. This upward trend is expected to exacerbate the already sweltering conditions.
Statewide Heatwave and Coastal Humidity Alert
The heatwave is not confined to Ahmedabad alone. Rajkot recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 41.1 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Amreli at 40.9 degrees Celsius, Surendranagar at 40.3 degrees Celsius, and Ahmedabad at 40.2 degrees Celsius. These figures highlight a widespread thermal anomaly affecting multiple districts.
From April 24 to 26, coastal areas of Gujarat are anticipated to experience hot and humid weather, adding discomfort to the already high temperatures. The combination of heat and humidity could pose health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations, and residents are advised to take necessary precautions such as staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun.
Long-Term Outlook and Preparedness
With the forecast indicating a gradual temperature rise in the coming days, authorities and citizens alike are urged to remain vigilant. The persistent upper air cyclonic circulation and the aftermath of the Western Disturbance suggest that the current weather pattern may persist, potentially leading to more severe heatwave conditions. Monitoring updates from the IMD and adhering to heat advisories will be crucial in mitigating the impacts of this escalating thermal event.
