Ahmedabad Endures Fourth Day of Scorching Heatwave
For the fourth day in a row, Ahmedabad has been gripped by an intense heatwave, with temperatures stubbornly refusing to dip below the 40-degree Celsius mark. The city has felt like a veritable kiln, offering residents little respite from the relentless summer heat.
Day and Night Temperatures Soar
On Tuesday, the daytime maximum temperature in Ahmedabad reached a blistering 41.4°C, which is two degrees above the seasonal average. However, what has been particularly alarming is the dramatic increase in nighttime temperatures. In a staggering 24-hour period, the minimum temperature climbed by 3.5 degrees, settling at 27°C. This significant rise has effectively eliminated any chance of a cool night's sleep for residents, compounding the discomfort caused by the daytime heat.
IMD Forecast: No Relief in Sight
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a concerning forecast, indicating that this "oven-effect" is likely to persist. According to their latest update, there will be no significant change in weather conditions across the region for the next seven days. Furthermore, maximum temperatures are expected to remain above 40°C in isolated pockets of Gujarat for at least the next five days.
For Wednesday, the maximum temperature in Ahmedabad is predicted to hover around 41°C, continuing the pattern of extreme heat. The IMD's extended forecast suggests that residents should prepare for continued high temperatures with minimal relief.
Regional Temperature Highlights
The heatwave is not confined to Ahmedabad alone. On Tuesday, several other cities in Gujarat recorded even higher temperatures:
- Rajkot recorded the highest maximum temperature at 42°C
- Amreli followed with 41.1°C
- Surendranagar reached 41°C
These readings underscore the widespread nature of the current heatwave affecting the state.
Potential Rainfall in Some Districts
While the overall forecast remains hot and dry, there is some hope for partial relief in specific areas. The IMD has indicated chances of light to moderate rainfall in parts of several districts on April 19 and 20. The affected districts include:
- Sabarkantha
- Aravalli
- Dahod
- Mahisagar
- Amreli
- Bhavnagar
However, this rainfall is expected to be localized and is unlikely to significantly impact the overall heatwave conditions prevailing across most of Gujarat.
As the heatwave continues, authorities are advising residents to take necessary precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours. The persistent high temperatures pose health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
