Ahmedabad Weather: Dust Storm and Showers Cause Disruption, Flights Diverted
Residents of Ahmedabad were jolted awake in the early hours of Thursday by a brief but intense dust storm, followed by sporadic evening showers that caught many off guard. The abrupt weather shift brought temporary relief as nighttime temperatures dipped, but left homes coated in a fine layer of grime and disrupted daily life across the city.
Sudden Onset of Dust Storm and Showers
Several localities reported strong gusts accompanied by suspended dust, significantly reducing visibility and creating hazardous conditions. "The windows were rattling, and it broke my sleep around 5.30am. The house was filled with a layer of dust as we forgot to close the windows," recounted Nishtha Sheth, a city-based professional, highlighting the sudden disruption.
Throughout the day, reports emerged of uprooted trees in various areas. By evening, many parts of Ahmedabad experienced drizzle or light showers, surprising citizens who were seen hastily taking cover from the unexpected precipitation.
Flight Operations Affected by Weather Conditions
The weather disturbance impacted air travel, with multiple flights being diverted due to strong wind conditions in Ahmedabad. Inbound Indigo flights from Kishangarh and Nashik, along with an Air India flight from Mumbai, were redirected to Indore on Thursday. Smaller aircraft operating on the Kishangarh and Nashik routes are particularly vulnerable to high-speed wind conditions, making safe landing challenging during such weather events.
Meteorological Factors Behind the Unsettled Weather
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the prevailing conditions to specific atmospheric systems. An upper air cyclonic circulation over west Rajasthan, combined with a western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining regions, has contributed to unstable weather patterns across Gujarat. These systems have triggered dust-laden winds and increased the likelihood of thunderstorms throughout the region.
"Wind speeds are expected to remain strong, with thunderstorms accompanied by surface winds of 50–60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, likely in parts of the region," stated A K Das, director of IMD Gujarat.
Temperature and Humidity Readings
On Thursday, Ahmedabad recorded specific weather measurements:
- Maximum temperature: 35.2°C (1.6 degrees below normal)
- Minimum temperature: 22.5°C (2.1 degrees above normal)
- Relative humidity: Ranged between 49% in the morning and 31% in the evening
The low humidity levels contributed significantly to the dry, dusty conditions experienced throughout the day.
Statewide Weather Patterns and Forecast
Across Gujarat, isolated rainfall was reported in parts of Saurashtra and Kutch, while Anand recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 36.1°C. The IMD has issued specific forecasts for the coming days:
- Light to moderate rain or thundershowers expected in Ahmedabad over the next 24 hours
- Marginal temperature dip anticipated over the next 24 hours
- Gradual temperature rise expected later in the week
- Dry conditions likely to prevail across the state from March 21 onward
This current spell of unsettled weather serves as a reminder of the region's climatic variability during this transitional period, with residents advised to stay updated on weather advisories and take necessary precautions during strong wind events.
