A tragic incident occurred in Meghalaya's Sohra region, where the body of a 15-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh was found a day after she fell into a waterfall while taking photographs, according to a PTI news agency report.
Accident at Wei Sawdong Falls
The girl was visiting the picturesque Wei Sawdong Falls, a popular tourist destination known for its tiered cascades and deep natural pools, when the accident happened on Wednesday. She was attempting to take photographs near the edge when she lost her footing and fell into the water, officials said.
Rescue and Search Operations
Rescue efforts were launched soon after she was reported missing. Teams, including local authorities and emergency responders, conducted extensive search operations throughout the day. However, due to fading light and difficult terrain, the search had to be suspended after sunset.
Local village volunteers resumed the search early the next morning and spotted the body lodged between rocks near the base of the waterfall. A senior official confirmed this to PTI, stating, 'Local village volunteers resumed the search early this morning and spotted the body, following which we recovered the body.'
Recovery of the Body
At around 7:30 am, the local village volunteer spotted her body. Following the discovery, a joint team of Fire and Emergency Services along with Sohra Police reached the site and successfully retrieved the body by approximately 10 am. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, officials further confirmed.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by natural attractions, especially when visitors venture too close to edges for photographs. Authorities urge tourists to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines at all times.
