Three Punjabi youths have been sentenced to imprisonment ranging from 25 months to five years in connection with a shooting incident in Surrey, Canada, in February this year, after they pleaded guilty to the charges.
Details of the Incident
According to a statement issued by the Surrey Police Service (SPS) on Wednesday, on February 1, 2026, at approximately 3:50 am, officers assigned to Project Assurance, working in collaboration with SPS's Major Crime Section, were patrolling in Surrey's Crescent Beach neighbourhood when reports came in of shots fired and a small fire outside a residence near Crescent Road and 132 Street. The three accused were arrested by SPS officers a short time later near 28 Avenue and 140 Street.
Investigation and Charges
SPS's Major Crime Section led the investigation and, in collaboration with officers on SPS's Project Assurance, was able to secure evidence leading to the charges against Harjot Singh (21), Taranveer Singh (19), and Dayajeet Singh Billing (21). All three were initially charged with one count of discharging a firearm into a place contrary to Section 244.2(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.
Guilty Pleas and Sentences
On June 9, 2026, the three men entered guilty pleas and were sentenced in Surrey Provincial Court. Taranveer Singh pleaded guilty to reckless discharge of a firearm and received a sentence of five years. Dayajeet Singh Billing pleaded guilty to throwing an explosive substance and received a sentence of 27 months. Harjot Singh pleaded guilty to throwing an explosive substance and received a sentence of 25 months.
The sentencing marks a significant outcome in a case that drew attention due to the involvement of young Punjabi men in a serious crime abroad. The Surrey Police Service emphasized the collaborative efforts that led to the swift apprehension and conviction of the accused.
