The Bengaluru West City Corporation has unveiled a new initiative to manage the stray dog population by designating model wards for dog control. The programme aims to achieve 100% Animal Birth Control (ABC) coverage and full anti-rabies vaccination of street dogs in the selected wards.
Model Wards for Comprehensive Dog Control
Under this plan, specific wards will be chosen as model areas where intensive efforts will be made to sterilize and vaccinate all street dogs. The corporation intends to replicate the success of these wards across the city in the future. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address public concerns about stray dogs while ensuring animal welfare.
Key Objectives of the Programme
- 100% ABC Coverage: All street dogs in model wards will undergo sterilization to control population growth humanely.
- Full Anti-Rabies Vaccination: Every dog will be vaccinated against rabies to reduce the risk of transmission to humans and other animals.
- Community Involvement: Residents and local animal welfare groups will be engaged to support the programme and monitor its progress.
Implementation Plan
The corporation will collaborate with veterinary experts and non-governmental organizations to conduct sterilization and vaccination drives. A detailed survey of the dog population in the selected wards will be carried out first to ensure accurate targeting. Regular follow-ups will be conducted to maintain vaccination coverage and monitor the health of the animals.
This initiative is expected to set a benchmark for dog population management in other parts of Bengaluru and beyond. By focusing on model wards, the corporation aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of scientific and humane methods in addressing the stray dog issue.
The announcement comes amid growing public demand for safer streets and better management of stray animals. The corporation has assured that the programme will be implemented transparently, with regular updates to the public.
