Sloth Bear Strays into Bengaluru Village, Attacks Bike-Borne Youths
Panic gripped Kodamballi village in Channapatna taluk of Ramanagara district, near Bengaluru, on Saturday morning when a sloth bear ventured into human habitat and launched an attack on two youths riding a motorbike. The incident sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the growing wildlife conflicts in the region.
Dramatic Escape and Vehicle Damage
According to local villagers, the two youngsters were traveling on the outskirts of the village when the bear suddenly attacked them. Although they managed to escape unharmed, the animal clung to their motorcycle, forcing them to abandon the vehicle and flee to safety. In a startling display of strength, the bear later tore apart the bike's seat using its sharp claws, causing significant damage.
Community Mobilization and Capture Operation
Alarmed by the attack, the youths immediately alerted other residents. Within minutes, a large group of villagers armed with sticks and nets rushed to the scene. The bear was still present at the spot when the crowd arrived, prompting them to notify both forest and police officials. As the villagers laid out nets to surround the animal, a few brave youngsters, assisted by forest department staff, managed to overpower the sloth bear and trap it securely in the net.
Injuries During the Capture
During the intense capture operation, two individuals sustained injuries. Muthu Naik, a forest department staffer, and Thammanna, a villager, were clawed by the bear. They were quickly rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Police officials confirmed that both are now out of danger, with doctors providing necessary care to ensure their recovery.
Post-Capture Procedures
Following the successful capture, the forest department took custody of the sloth bear and subjected it to a thorough veterinary examination. This step is crucial to assess the animal's health and determine the appropriate next steps, which may include relocation to a safer habitat to prevent future conflicts.
