Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto held wide-ranging talks in New Delhi on Tuesday, focusing on the evolving situation in West Asia and ways to enhance bilateral defence cooperation. The two leaders discussed regional security challenges, including the conflict in Gaza and the broader implications for stability in the Middle East.
Key Highlights of the Meeting
During the meeting, both ministers emphasized the importance of strengthening defence ties between India and Italy. They explored avenues for joint military exercises, defence technology collaboration, and increased interoperability between their armed forces. Singh and Crosetto also exchanged views on maritime security in the Indian Ocean region, underscoring the need for a rules-based order.
West Asia Situation Discussed
The discussions on West Asia covered the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the need for de-escalation, and the importance of a two-state solution for lasting peace. Both sides condemned terrorism in all its forms and stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy. They agreed to work together in multilateral forums to promote peace and stability in the region.
Singh also briefed Crosetto on India's defence modernization plans and its vision for a self-reliant defence industry under the 'Make in India' initiative. The Italian minister expressed interest in collaborating with Indian defence startups and exploring co-production opportunities.
Bilateral Defence Cooperation
The two ministers reviewed existing defence cooperation agreements and identified new areas for collaboration, including cyber defence, space, and artificial intelligence. They also discussed the potential for joint development of military hardware and technology transfer. Both sides agreed to hold the next round of the India-Italy Joint Defence Working Group at an early date.
Crosetto, who is on a three-day visit to India, also paid tribute to the Indian soldiers who fought in World War I and II at the Italian War Memorial in New Delhi. He expressed Italy's commitment to deepening the strategic partnership with India.
