Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh on Weather Watch Till June 14

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for several states in north India, predicting a significant change in conditions from June 11 to June 15. A combination of the advancing southwest monsoon and an approaching western disturbance is expected to bring widespread rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and hailstorms across the region.

Monsoon Progress and Weather Systems

The IMD reported that the southwest monsoon has advanced further into the remaining parts of northeastern states, the entire Sikkim region, and additional areas of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. This progression, coupled with a western disturbance, is likely to trigger storm activity over large parts of the country.

Forecast for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi

Scattered rainfall is expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from June 11 to June 15. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-60 kmph are likely on June 13 and 14. Stronger thundersqualls with wind speeds of 50-70 kmph are forecast on June 11 and 12, which may cause disruptions to daily life. The IMD has also warned of isolated hailstorm activity in these areas on June 11 and 12.

Impact on Hill States

Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir are likely to experience widespread rainfall on June 11 and 12, while Uttarakhand may see rain throughout the week. Thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds are also expected in these hill states.

Temperature Changes

Maximum temperatures over northwest India are expected to rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius until June 11, before dropping sharply by 4-6 degrees on June 12 and 13 due to rainfall and cloud cover. Despite the approaching wet spell, heatwave conditions are likely to persist in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan till June 11.

Heavy Rainfall in Other Regions

Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast over Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, northeast India, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal over the next five to seven days, signaling an active monsoon phase across large parts of the country.

The IMD continues to monitor the situation and advises residents in affected areas to take precautions against thunderstorms, strong winds, and hailstorms.
