Residents of the Kothrud depot area on Paud Road in Pune have raised strong objections to the proposed design and alignment of the upcoming Metro station and a double-decker flyover, demanding a comprehensive rethink as the existing plan is not seen as beneficial. They have submitted letters detailing their apprehensions to officials of Maha Metro and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), urging local corporators to consider their demands before work progresses further.
Preliminary work underway
Maha Metro has initiated preliminary work on the Vanaz to Chandni Chowk extension. This stretch will feature two stations: one at Kothrud depot and another at Chandni Chowk-Bhusari colony. The viaduct is planned to cross over the Kothrud depot, where the station has been proposed. Additionally, the PMC has planned a double-decker flyover along the same stretch.
Traffic congestion concerns
Residents have expressed worry that the design of the flyover, particularly the ramps, could lead to severe traffic snarls at both ends. The entire stretch already experiences excessive traffic congestion, and the landing of flyover ramps would only add to the chaos. Resident Rahul Chavan said, "We are following up on the issues and awaiting responses from the Metro and PMC. There should be a dialogue to clear our doubts. It must be ensured that residents are not inconvenienced because of the project. The main concerns pertain to the flyover's design and changes proposed in the location of the Metro station. People are unsure if there would be adequate space on footpaths after construction of the entry-exit points."
Signature campaign and next steps
Local residents recently conducted a signature campaign, with over 400 people voicing their protest against the current plans. Chavan added, "We are seeking feedback from protesters. There is a plan to submit fresh letters to the authorities."
Official response
PMC officials stated that a field survey of the Vanaz-Chandni Chowk stretch has been completed in coordination with the Metro. Maha Metro officials confirmed that a Metro Samwad programme will be held in the area to discuss issues and clear doubts regarding the project plan and designs of the Metro station.
Additionally, sources indicated that residents want the flyover to be extended up to Bhusari colony instead of its proposed landing in the Kothrud depot area.
