Pakistan's first Hangor-class diesel-electric attack submarine arrived at Karachi Port on Friday, marking a significant milestone in the country's naval capabilities. The submarine was built in China under an agreement signed in 2015 between the two nations for the construction of eight Hangor-class submarines.
Strategic Significance
The arrival of the submarine underscores the deepening defense ties between Pakistan and China. The Hangor-class submarines are designed for a variety of missions, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and mine laying. They are equipped with advanced stealth technology and modern weapon systems, enhancing Pakistan's maritime security.
Background of the Agreement
The 2015 agreement involved the transfer of technology and the construction of four submarines in China and four in Pakistan under a joint venture. The first submarine, built entirely in China, has now been delivered. The remaining vessels are expected to be completed over the next few years, with the final submarine slated for delivery by 2028.
Defense analysts view this development as a strategic move to counterbalance India's growing naval presence in the Indian Ocean region. The submarines will provide Pakistan with a credible underwater deterrent capability.
The formal induction ceremony is expected to take place in the coming weeks, with senior military officials from both Pakistan and China in attendance. The submarine will undergo sea trials and crew training before being commissioned into the Pakistan Navy.
