A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced four leaders of former prime minister Imran Khan's party to 10 years in prison, while acquitting former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in a case related to the 2023 riots.
The convicts have been lodged in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail since 2023 and have earlier been sentenced in other cases related to the riots. The four leaders include senior PTI figures who were arrested following the violent protests that erupted after Khan's arrest in May 2023.
Court Verdict Details
The anti-terrorism court announced the verdict after hearing arguments from both sides. The four convicts were found guilty of inciting violence, arson, and attacking state property during the protests. They were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with fines.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a close aide of Khan and former foreign minister, was acquitted due to lack of evidence. His lawyer welcomed the decision, stating that the charges were politically motivated.
The convicted leaders have the right to appeal the verdict in higher courts. Their legal team said they would challenge the decision.
Background of the Case
The riots broke out in May 2023 after Imran Khan's arrest in a corruption case. Supporters of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), clashed with security forces, resulting in several deaths and injuries. The government launched a crackdown, arresting hundreds of PTI workers and leaders.
The four convicts were among those arrested and have been in custody since then. They were previously sentenced in other cases related to the same riots.
The acquittal of Qureshi is seen as a relief for the PTI, which has faced a severe crackdown. However, the party remains under pressure as Khan himself is serving a prison sentence in multiple cases.
Political analysts say the verdict could impact the upcoming elections, as PTI may use the acquittal to rally support. The government maintains that the legal process was fair and independent.
