A massive sinkhole emerged on the Sohna Expressway in Gurugram on Tuesday, leading to significant traffic disruptions. The incident occurred near the Kherki Daula toll plaza, causing vehicles to slow down and creating long queues. This marks the third occurrence of a sinkhole on this stretch in the past three years.
Details of the Incident
The sinkhole, approximately 10 feet deep and 8 feet wide, appeared on the main carriageway around 8 a.m. commuters reported sudden dips in the road surface, forcing drivers to brake abruptly. Local authorities quickly cordoned off the area to prevent accidents. Traffic police were deployed to manage the congestion, which stretched for kilometers.
Previous Sinkholes
This is not an isolated event. In 2024, a similar sinkhole formed near the same location, causing a vehicle to fall into it. Another incident in 2023 also led to traffic snarls. Experts attribute these occurrences to poor drainage systems and soil erosion beneath the road.
Response from Authorities
Gurugram Deputy Commissioner said that a team of engineers has been dispatched to assess the damage. Repair work is expected to begin immediately, with the aim of restoring normal traffic flow within 24 hours. He assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to prevent future incidents.
Impact on Commuters
Commuters faced significant delays, with many reporting travel times doubling. Office-goers and students were particularly affected. Some took to social media to express frustration, calling for better road maintenance. The expressway connects Gurugram to Sohna and is a vital link for thousands of daily travelers.
Safety Concerns Raised
Residents and road safety activists have demanded a comprehensive review of the expressway's construction quality. They argue that recurring sinkholes indicate a systemic failure in infrastructure planning. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been urged to conduct a geotechnical survey of the entire stretch.
As repair work progresses, authorities advise commuters to use alternative routes such as the Delhi-Jaipur Highway or the Southern Peripheral Road. Updates on the situation will be provided through official channels.
