A 34-year-old villager was killed by lions in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district on Wednesday, marking the second such incident in two days and raising concerns over human-wildlife conflict in the region.
Deputy Conservator of Forests (DFO) Chirag Amin confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary investigations suggest a lion attack. The victim, identified as a resident of a nearby village, was found dead in a field on the outskirts of the forest area.
Details of the Incident
The attack occurred in the early morning hours when the villager had gone to tend to his crops. Forest officials rushed to the spot after receiving information from locals. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and a search is underway to locate the lion involved.
This is the second fatal lion attack in the Bhavnagar district within 48 hours. On Monday, a 50-year-old farmer was killed in a similar incident in a neighboring village. The back-to-back attacks have sparked fear among residents living near the Gir forest region, which is home to the Asiatic lion.
Official Response
DFO Amin stated that forest teams have been deployed to track the animal and prevent further incidents. He urged villagers to remain cautious and avoid venturing into forest areas alone, especially during dawn and dusk.
Authorities are also considering temporary measures such as setting up watchtowers and deploying additional patrolling teams in vulnerable zones. Compensation for the victim's family will be provided under the state government's wildlife relief scheme.
Rising Human-Lion Conflict
Gujarat has witnessed an increase in human-lion conflicts in recent years as the lion population grows and their habitat expands beyond protected areas. Conservationists emphasize the need for better coexistence strategies, including fencing, early warning systems, and community awareness programs.
The state forest department has recorded several lion attacks on humans, though fatalities remain relatively rare. Officials are investigating whether the same lion is responsible for both attacks.
