In a significant administrative move, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Monday approved the notification for the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory, aimed at strengthening grassroots governance and decentralizing administration.
The newly created districts are Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass. With this addition, the total number of districts in Ladakh has increased from two to seven.
Taking to social media platform X, Lt Governor Saxena described it as a historic day for Ladakh. He stated, "I have approved the notification for creation of five new districts in Ladakh, fulfilling the aspirations and long-pending demand of the people of Ladakh. With creation of five new districts - Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass - Ladakh will now have seven districts, from existing two. The development is aligned with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision of a developed & prosperous Ladakh."
He further elaborated that the transformative decision, already approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024 under Union Home Minister Amit Shah, would strengthen grassroots governance, decentralize administration, and ensure faster delivery of public services to the people of Ladakh, especially those in remote and far-flung areas.
Saxena emphasized that apart from bringing governance closer to citizens, the creation of new districts will open up new avenues for growth, employment, and entrepreneurship. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that every citizen of Ladakh benefits from this historic decision as they move together towards a brighter, stronger, and more prosperous future.
Ladakh became a Union Territory on October 31, 2019. It is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and distinct culture.
