Kutch Diesel Crisis: Trade Bodies Warn of Agitation from June 1

Ahmedabad: As the diesel supply shortage worsens, disrupting transport, port operations, and industrial activities across the Kutch district, trade and industry bodies have warned of launching an agitation if fuel availability does not improve by June 1.

Joint Meeting Highlights Growing Concerns

At a joint meeting held at the Gandhidham Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday, representatives from transport associations, logistics operators, salt manufacturers, timber traders, and port-linked businesses highlighted that the restricted diesel supply is severely affecting the movement of trucks, trailers, and heavy machinery across the district. The shortage has created a cascading impact on various sectors, leading to operational delays and mounting uncertainty for businesses.

Critical Role of Kutch in Exports

Industry representatives emphasized that Kutch, home to major ports such as Kandla and Mundra, plays a pivotal role in the country's exports. A prolonged fuel shortage could significantly impact cargo movement and industrial operations. The diesel scarcity has also hindered the running of essential industrial equipment like cranes and diesel generator sets, further exacerbating delays and financial losses.

Demands for Immediate Intervention

After the meeting, the bodies decided to submit joint representations to oil marketing companies, district authorities, and the state administration, seeking immediate intervention and higher diesel allocation for the region. Trade leaders also demanded special quotas for the transport sector and heavy machinery operators. Additionally, they called for a joint meeting with government officials and oil companies to gain clarity on the situation and find a sustainable solution.

Warning of Agitation

The trade groups warned of launching an agitation if the situation does not improve by June 1. However, they added that their first attempt would be to resolve the issue through dialogue and coordination with the administration. The warning underscores the urgency of the crisis, which threatens to paralyze economic activities in one of India's key industrial and port regions.

Trade bodies are hopeful that the authorities will take swift action to avert a full-blown crisis that could have far-reaching consequences for the local economy and national trade.
