Kovalam Tourism Faces Sharp Decline Amid Middle East Conflict and Infrastructure Woes
Kovalam Tourism Decline: Middle East Conflict, Infrastructure Woes

Thiruvananthapuram: Kovalam, Kerala's most popular beach destination, is experiencing a significant downturn in tourism. Visitor arrivals this April have dropped considerably compared to the same month last year, a worrying trend given that summer holidays typically boost domestic travel.

Hotel Occupancy and Revenue Hit

Hotels in Kovalam are reporting reduced occupancy and declining revenue from both room bookings and food and beverage sales. Most visitors are day-trippers from nearby areas, including southern Tamil Nadu districts, but these footfalls generate minimal economic impact.

Root Causes: LPG Shortage and Middle East Conflict

The troubles began last month when an LPG shortage, triggered by the US-Israel conflict with Iran, disrupted hotel and resort operations and marred the tourist experience. Although gas supplies have normalized, tourist numbers have dwindled to a trickle. Travel operators believe the Middle East conflict may be partly responsible, as it has reduced arrivals of NRIs from Gulf countries. However, the lack of tourists from other Indian states remains puzzling.

Sudheesh Kumar, patron of the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association, noted that while visitor numbers are clearly down compared to last April, it is impossible to attribute the decline to a single cause.

Changing Visitor Profile and Spending Patterns

Kovalam is witnessing a shift in visitor demographics, with more frugal spending. Domestic travelers are increasingly replacing foreign tourists, even during peak season. Most prefer short stays, avoid hotel dining, and opt for street food and small eateries, eroding tourism revenues.

In 2024, Kovalam received 6.07 lakh domestic tourists and 79,000 foreign tourists. It no longer ranks among Kerala's top destinations for either category.

Hopeful Signs: Elections and Foreign Season

Hoteliers are optimistic that arrivals will improve once elections conclude in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, which have traditionally sent large numbers of tourists to Kovalam. The foreign tourist season is also yet to begin. The beach draws visitors from northern states like Rajasthan and Gujarat, as well as neighboring regions.

Hotel owners hope that with elections in Tamil Nadu concluded and those in West Bengal nearing completion, tourist numbers will pick up in the coming days.

Infrastructure Neglect Compounds Struggles

Kovalam's challenges are exacerbated by long-standing infrastructure neglect. Beaches remain unkempt, walkways need repair, parking is chaotic, and the entry road off the highway lacks proper markings. Work that should have been completed before the summer season remains unfinished.

Calls for Government Action

Hoteliers' associations have repeatedly urged the government to enhance nightlife, create designated entertainment zones, promote water sports like surfing, and develop tourist-friendly events centered around Kovalam. However, the state tourism department has yet to launch a Kovalam-specific destination marketing campaign targeting domestic or foreign tourists.
