Agricultural experts launched the 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' in Sangrur on Thursday to promote the judicious use of fertilisers among farmers across Punjab. The initiative, supported by the Punjab Government and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), aims to raise awareness among self-help groups (SHGs) and progressive farmers.
One-Day Awareness Seminar
A one-day awareness seminar was organised for capacity building of SHGs and progressive farmers in Sangrur district. Over 100 members and farmers participated in the programme, which focused on the balanced use of fertilisers to improve soil fertility and reduce expenditure.
Key Highlights from the Seminar
Mandeep Singh, incharge of PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, stated that many farmers in the district apply excessive fertiliser to crops, adversely affecting soil fertility and increasing costs. During the seminar, scientific information on balanced fertiliser use was shared with participants.
- SHG members and farmers learned about soil testing and the correct method of soil sampling for determining balanced fertiliser use.
- They were informed about recommended fertiliser doses for different crops, the right time to apply fertilisers, and the correct application method as per PAU recommendations.
- Farmers were also made aware of improving soil health through green manuring, organic fertilisers, incorporation of crop residue, and the benefits of organic farming.
Scientific Sampling Techniques
Amarpreet Kaur, programme assistant and lab technician, provided detailed information on the scientific method of sampling soil and water for testing. This included the right time for sampling, selection of location in the field, sampling technique, soil preparation, and precautions to be taken during the process.
Call for Collaboration
Experts urged SHG members and farmers to collaborate with PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra to help spread information on new agricultural technologies and balanced use of fertilisers. The initiative aims to ensure sustainable farming practices and better soil health in Punjab.
