Kerala, Karnataka Set for Talks on Bandipur Night Traffic Ban Issue

Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan announced on Wednesday that he would hold discussions with his Karnataka counterpart D K Shivakumar to resolve the ongoing night traffic ban issue along the Bandipur tiger reserve. The move aims to find a mutually acceptable solution to the problem that has affected vehicular movement between the two states.

The night traffic ban, imposed by Karnataka authorities to protect wildlife in the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, has been a point of contention for Kerala, as it disrupts transportation and trade routes. The ban restricts vehicle movement through the reserve during nighttime hours, causing delays and inconvenience for commuters and goods transport.

Chief Minister Satheesan stated that the talks would focus on balancing ecological concerns with the need for seamless connectivity. He emphasized the importance of preserving the tiger reserve's ecosystem while ensuring minimal disruption to daily life and economic activities.

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has expressed willingness to engage in dialogue, acknowledging the need for a cooperative approach. The discussions are expected to explore alternative measures, such as enhanced safety protocols, wildlife corridors, or adjusted timings, to mitigate the impact on traffic while safeguarding wildlife.

Both states have faced pressure from local communities and businesses to resolve the issue promptly. The Bandipur night traffic ban has been a longstanding dispute, with previous attempts at resolution yielding limited success. The upcoming talks represent a fresh effort to find a sustainable compromise.

Environmentalists have supported the ban, citing its role in reducing animal fatalities and habitat disturbance. However, they also recognize the need for collaborative solutions that address the concerns of both states. The outcome of the discussions is keenly awaited by stakeholders on both sides.
