External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday highlighted India's proactive response to a world in transition, stressing the need for unity among Global South nations, reformed multilateralism, and multipolarity. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, he outlined India's vision for a more inclusive global order that addresses the aspirations of developing countries.
Global South Unity
Jaishankar underscored the importance of collective action by countries of the Global South to address common challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and access to technology. He noted that India has been working to amplify the voices of these nations on global platforms, including through its G20 presidency and initiatives like the Voice of the Global South Summit.
Reformed Multilateralism
The minister called for comprehensive reforms of multilateral institutions, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to reflect contemporary realities. He argued that outdated structures hinder effective global governance and that institutions must be more representative and responsive to the needs of all nations, especially those from the developing world.
Multipolarity and Strategic Autonomy
Jaishankar emphasized that India's foreign policy is rooted in the principle of multipolarity, where multiple centers of power coexist and cooperate. He stressed the importance of strategic autonomy, allowing India to pursue its national interests while engaging with various global powers. This approach, he said, enables India to contribute to global stability and prosperity.
India's Role in a Changing World
Highlighting India's growing global role, Jaishankar pointed to its contributions in areas such as peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, and sustainable development. He noted that India's economic growth and technological advancements position it as a key player in shaping the future global order.
The event also featured discussions on India's engagement with regions like Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, reflecting its commitment to fostering partnerships across the Global South. Jaishankar concluded by reiterating India's dedication to a rules-based international order that ensures peace, security, and prosperity for all.
