An Indian woman living in Dublin has captured the quiet heartbreak of missing a loved one’s wedding, calling it the true cost of living abroad. Prachi Dusad, who has been residing in Ireland for three years, shared a viral video on Instagram reflecting on the emotional realities of life overseas.
The Real Cost of Living Abroad
In the video, Dusad explains that the cost of living abroad extends far beyond financial expenses such as rent, bills, and groceries. She describes the pain of watching her cousin’s wedding in India from afar through photos and videos shared on a family WhatsApp group. “I am literally looking at every photo, every video multiple times and this kind of FOMO has not hit me in a very long time,” she says. “I just want to go back. I just want to be with them.”
Commitments Over Finances
Dusad emphasizes that her absence is not due to money—she can afford the flight tickets—but because of the commitments and life she has built in Ireland. “This, this exactly, is the cost of living here, living abroad,” she adds.
Embracing Mixed Emotions
In the caption, Dusad speaks about the emotional side of living abroad. She notes that every decision has pros and cons. Some days bring growth and independence, while others bring confusion and homesickness. “It’s okay to feel both, grateful for where you are, and homesick for where your heart still belongs,” she writes.
Her video has resonated with many in the diaspora, highlighting the often-unspoken emotional challenges of living away from family and cultural celebrations.
