Indian Railways has sanctioned a Rs 220.51 crore project to double the 10.65 km track in the Mararikulam-Alappuzha section, marking a significant step toward improving rail connectivity in Kerala. This section is the last remaining single-line stretch on the Ernakulam-Alappuzha-Kayamkulam corridor, where other doubling works have already been completed or are underway.
Project Details and Expected Benefits
Upon completion, the doubling project is expected to facilitate the operation of nine additional passenger trains in both directions each day. A railway official confirmed that approval has now been received for all reaches on the coastal line, and the tender for commencing work on this route will be issued shortly. The doubling process for other reaches is progressing at various stages.
The overall doubling of the 102 km coastal line is projected to support freight traffic of 2.88 million tonnes per annum and generate additional net earnings of approximately Rs 3.08 crore annually through enhanced passenger and freight movement.
Current Status of Doubling Works
While railways have expedited track doubling works in the Ernakulam-Thuravoor section (23 km), work in the Ambalappuzha-Thuravoor section (46 km) has yet to begin. Meanwhile, the doubling work along the Kayamkulam-Ambalappuzha section (31 km) has been completed.
This project is expected to boost connectivity in the region, reduce travel time, and improve the efficiency of rail operations on this crucial coastal corridor.
