India has lodged a strong protest with the United States over the recent attacks on Indian seafarers in the Gulf of Oman. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Thursday that it had taken up the matter with the American side following two separate incidents involving Palau-flagged oil tankers.
First Incident: Marivex Tanker
On June 8, a Palau-flagged oil tanker named Marivex, carrying 24 Indian seafarers, was disabled by US forces. All crew members were safely rescued, and no casualties were reported in this incident.
Second Incident: Settebello Tanker
Just two days later, on June 10, US forces struck another Palau-flagged tanker, the Settebello, which also had 24 Indian sailors on board. This attack resulted in the deaths of three Indian crew members, while the remaining 21 were rescued. The MEA expressed deep concern over the loss of life and the safety of Indian nationals in the region.
India's Diplomatic Response
The MEA stated, 'We lodged a strong protest with the American side over the incidents. We have demanded a thorough investigation and assurance that such actions will not be repeated.' The ministry also confirmed that it is in touch with the families of the deceased and is providing all necessary assistance.
The United States has not yet officially commented on the protest. However, sources indicate that the US Navy is reviewing the incidents. The attacks have raised tensions in the region, which has seen increased naval activity in recent months.
India has also raised the matter with Oman, as the incidents occurred in Omani waters. The Indian embassy in Muscat is coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers.
The MEA reiterated its commitment to protecting Indian citizens abroad and called for adherence to international maritime laws. The incident has sparked concerns among the Indian seafaring community, with calls for enhanced security measures for merchant vessels in conflict zones.
