NEW DELHI: India's power consumption witnessed a year-on-year growth of over 4% in April 2025, reaching 154 billion units compared to the same period in 2024. While peak power demand broke the all-time high record, officials noted that subdued temperatures during the first ten days of the month, due to spells of rain in parts of the country, kept consumption in check.
Record Peak Demand
Data from Grid India revealed that peak power demand soared to 256.1 GW on April 25, as electricity consumption broke all records amid soaring mercury levels and increased usage of air conditioners by commercial and domestic consumers. The average demand for the month was estimated at 229.2 GW. There were four days during the month when demand crossed the 250 GW mark.
Factors Influencing Consumption
The early-month rains helped moderate consumption, preventing an even steeper rise. However, the latter part of April saw a sharp uptick in demand driven by heatwaves across several regions. The combination of higher temperatures and economic activity pushed the grid to its limits.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation as summer progresses, with expectations that demand may continue to rise in May and June. The power ministry has assured adequate coal and gas supplies to meet the growing demand.
