Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Store announced the elevation of India-Norway bilateral relations to a green strategic partnership during Modi's official visit to Norway. The announcement came after extensive talks between the two leaders, focusing on cooperation in renewable energy, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.
Key Highlights of the Partnership
The green strategic partnership will prioritize areas such as offshore wind energy, green hydrogen, and electric mobility. Both countries agreed to collaborate on technology transfer, capacity building, and joint research initiatives. Norway's expertise in ocean energy and India's ambitious renewable energy targets were cited as complementary strengths.
Renewable Energy Cooperation
India aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, and Norway's experience in offshore wind and hydropower will be instrumental. The partnership includes a joint task force to identify specific projects and investment opportunities.
Climate Change and Environment
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement and discussed ways to enhance climate action. They agreed to work together on sustainable ocean management, plastic waste reduction, and green shipping.
Trade and Investment
The partnership is expected to boost bilateral trade and investment, particularly in green technologies. Norway's sovereign wealth fund and Indian green bonds were highlighted as potential avenues for collaboration.
Prime Minister Store praised India's leadership in renewable energy and expressed confidence that the partnership would set a global example. PM Modi emphasized that the green strategic partnership reflects shared values and a common vision for a sustainable future.
The visit also saw the signing of several MoUs in areas like climate research, Arctic cooperation, and health. The two leaders agreed to hold regular consultations to monitor progress under the partnership.
