Indian Ambassador to Italy, Neena Malhotra, has stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Italy will prioritize enhancing bilateral ties in trade, defence, mobility, and maritime security. The visit, scheduled for later this month, aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Key Focus Areas
Speaking to reporters, Ambassador Malhotra highlighted several key areas of cooperation that will be discussed during the visit. These include boosting bilateral trade, which currently stands at around USD 15 billion, with potential for growth in sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure, and technology. Defence cooperation will also be a major focus, with both countries looking to expand joint exercises, training, and collaboration in defence manufacturing.
Mobility and Migration
Another significant area is mobility and migration, where India and Italy aim to facilitate easier movement of professionals, students, and skilled workers. An agreement on migration and mobility is expected to be signed, which will benefit Indian professionals in Italy and vice versa.
Maritime Security
Maritime security will be a key topic, given the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean regions. Both countries are expected to enhance cooperation in naval exercises, information sharing, and combating piracy and other maritime threats.
Economic and Cultural Ties
The visit will also focus on strengthening economic ties, with Italy being a major trading partner for India in the European Union. Cultural exchanges and tourism are expected to receive a boost, with Italy being a popular destination for Indian tourists. The two countries will also collaborate on climate change and sustainable development goals.
Ambassador Malhotra emphasized that the visit reflects the growing importance of the India-Italy relationship, which has seen significant progress in recent years. The discussions will lay the groundwork for a comprehensive strategic partnership that addresses regional and global challenges.
