Heavy rainfall in Bengaluru on Tuesday has brought the city's traffic to a standstill, severely affecting routes leading to Kempegowda International Airport. Commuters faced long delays as waterlogging on key roads and underpasses disrupted vehicular movement.
Authorities Issue Advisory
In response to the situation, local authorities have advised commuters to avoid waterlogged routes, plan their travel in advance, and use alternate roads where possible. The India Meteorological Department has predicted intermittent rainfall to continue over the next few days, which may exacerbate the situation.
Impact on Airport Routes
The heavy downpour particularly impacted roads leading to Kempegowda International Airport, with several stretches submerged under water. Passengers heading to the airport were advised to leave extra travel time or consider alternative transport options. The airport itself reported no disruptions to flight operations, but ground access remained challenging.
Traffic police were deployed at major junctions to manage congestion, but the sheer volume of water on roads made movement slow. Many commuters reported spending over two hours on routes that typically take 30 minutes.
Broader Impact on Bengaluru
The rain also caused waterlogging in low-lying areas across the city, leading to traffic snarls on major arterial roads such as Outer Ring Road, Bannerghatta Road, and Old Airport Road. Several vehicles broke down on waterlogged stretches, further compounding the problem.
Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of preparedness, with many taking to social media to share images of submerged roads and stalled traffic. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has deployed pumps to clear water from critical points, but progress has been slow.
As the city braces for more rain, authorities urge residents to stay updated on traffic advisories and avoid unnecessary travel. The situation is expected to improve once the rain subsides, but commuters are advised to remain cautious.
