Four Villagers Seriously Injured in Leopard Attack in Gadchiroli
In a shocking wildlife incident, four villagers were wounded, three of them seriously, after attempting to get closer and take selfies with an injured leopard in Chambharda, Gadchiroli district, on Wednesday morning. The leopard, which was found lying motionless near a rural road, had been incapacitated during a fight with a tiger, according to officials and local sources.
Dangerous Curiosity Leads to Attack
The incident unfolded when the leopard was discovered near the Chambharda-Maregaon rural road, close to the farm of Haridas Munghate in the Porla forest range. The sight of the motionless animal drew curious onlookers, some of whom ventured dangerously close under the assumption that the leopard was dead. Despite its severe injuries, the leopard suddenly sprang to life and attacked the group.
The injured individuals include:
- Vilas Thakre, 48, resident of Chambharda, sustained serious injuries.
- Rekha Vitthal Madavi, 45, resident of Chambharda, sustained serious injuries.
- Lumaji Munghate, 40, from nearby Temba, sustained serious injuries.
- Leeladhar Munghate, 37, suffered minor wounds and is reported to be in stable condition.
Immediate Response and Aftermath
Range forest officer Rajesh Pachbhai and his team rushed to the spot immediately after the attack. The injured persons were provided first aid at the primary health sub-centre in Chambharda and were later admitted to the district general hospital for further treatment. A veterinary team was called to examine the leopard, but with no signs of movement, the animal was confirmed dead at the scene.
Forest officials conducted a detailed examination of the carcass and found deep wounds and bite marks on the body and neck. These injuries indicated that the leopard likely died from severe trauma sustained during a fight with a tiger. Following an autopsy, the carcass was incinerated in the presence of witnesses to ensure proper disposal and prevent any further risks.
Lessons in Wildlife Safety
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of approaching wild animals, even when they appear injured or motionless. Wildlife experts emphasize that such situations can be highly unpredictable, and maintaining a safe distance is crucial to avoid tragic encounters. The forest department has reiterated the importance of reporting injured animals to authorities rather than attempting to interact with them.
The community in Gadchiroli is now reflecting on the need for greater awareness about wildlife conservation and safety protocols. As investigations continue, officials are working to ensure that similar incidents are prevented in the future through education and stricter enforcement of wildlife protection measures.
