The forest department has continued its efforts to capture a wild elephant believed to have trampled to death the wife of a senior IPS officer recently at Konanakatte village in South Kodagu. The department is deploying drone cameras, but with limited success so far.

Radio Collars and Monitoring

A group of elephants has been fitted with radio collars, and their movements are being closely monitored. Despite this, four teams of the department conducted operations for two days but could not locate the elephant, foresters reported.

Operation Details

The search operation was carried out in the forest area adjacent to the grower's estate in Konanakatte, where the tragic incident occurred last week. On the first day, five elephants from the Mathigodu elephant camp participated in the operation. These jumbos operated until early evening before returning to the camp. Many staff members took part under the supervision of officials, including Gangadhar of the Thithimathi forest range and Devaraj of Wildlife. The operation resumed on Monday.

Meanwhile, other elephants have camped in various estates of Andagove village in Kushalnagar taluk. An operation to drive them out has been launched under the jurisdiction of the Athur forest division of Kushalnagar range.
