Dibrugarh: Devotees gathered at the Boudha Vihar in Sivasagar town on Friday to observe Buddha Purnima, with special programmes organised to mark the 2570th Buddha Jayanti. The day's observances included prayers and the lighting of lamps and candles at the Buddhist temple.
Community Prayer and Peace Procession
A community prayer session was also held, attended by members of the local Buddhist community and residents of the town. A procession for world peace was taken out as part of the celebrations, with participants marching through the streets of Sivasagar in keeping with the Buddhist values of non-violence and harmony.
“This day reminds us of the Buddha’s teachings on peace and compassion. Coming together as a community to observe Buddha Purnima is both a religious duty and a celebration of those values. The peace procession is our way of carrying the Buddha’s message beyond the temple and into the wider community. It is a tradition we observe every year on this occasion,” said an organiser of the event.
Significance of Buddha Purnima
Buddha Purnima, observed on the full moon day of the month of Vaisakha, marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of Gautama Buddha — three events traditionally believed to have occurred on the same lunar date. The occasion is observed by Buddhist communities across the country with prayer, reflection and community gatherings.
Community Participation
The programmes at the Boudha Vihar were attended by a cross-section of the local community. The temple premises saw a steady gathering of devotees through the day, with prayers and rituals conducted in accordance with Buddhist custom. The event highlighted the enduring relevance of Buddha's teachings in promoting peace and unity among people.
