BJP's Habbey Teron Wins Amri Seat in Assam by 23,910 Votes

NEW DELHI: Habbey Teron of the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged victorious in the Amri (ST) assembly constituency, securing 50,273 votes. He defeated Independent candidate Bikram Hanse by a significant margin of 23,910 votes. Hanse managed to get 26,363 votes, while Independent candidate Wilson Terang finished third with only 972 votes. The None of the Above (NOTA) option received 1,829 votes in this newly formed constituency.

New Constituency in West Karbi Anglong

The Amri (ST) assembly constituency, located in Assam's West Karbi Anglong district, was created as part of the 2023 delimitation exercise. It is reserved for Scheduled Tribes and went to polls on April 9. Since it is a newly formed seat, there is no sitting MLA or past electoral record to compare. The BJP fielded Dr. Habe Teron as its candidate, who also received backing from Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang. Notably, the Congress party did not field a candidate in this constituency.

Key Issues in the Campaign

The election campaign in Amri primarily focused on issues affecting tribal communities. Recurring land disputes, especially evictions from grazing reserves, were a major concern. Residents also highlighted inadequate infrastructure and lack of educational facilities, particularly in the hilly terrain of West Karbi Anglong. Unemployment among tribal youth remains a pressing issue, forcing many to migrate for better opportunities.
