Bengaluru Braces for Pre-Monsoon Storms; Hail, Gusty Winds Expected

Bengaluru is bracing for a brief but intense spell of pre-monsoon weather, with forecasts indicating showers, thundershowers, and even hail over the next few days. According to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the stormy conditions affecting the city and surrounding parts of South Interior Karnataka are expected to improve from May 2 onward.

The IMD predicts fairly widespread to scattered rainfall across Bengaluru, with light to moderate thundershowers that may be accompanied by hail and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–60 kmph. These sudden showers, lightning, and strong winds could cause minor disruptions, including waterlogging in low-lying areas, making travel difficult during peak hours. Flights, road traffic, and outdoor activities are likely to be affected. For May 1, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall with isolated hailstorms in South Interior Karnataka. From May 2, rainfall activity in Bengaluru is expected to decrease significantly, with only isolated showers in one or two spots, signaling a shift from stormy to more stable weather.

Weather Across India

The weather scenario across India contrasts with Bengaluru's conditions. The IMD's All India Weather Forecast attributes the current pattern to a western disturbance over the Himalayas and a trough extending from South Interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar.

Northeast India is expected to receive the heaviest rainfall. States like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy to very heavy showers continuing until May 3. These intense rains may lead to flooding in vulnerable areas, disrupting road transport and air traffic. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also predicted to see persistent rains with gusty winds over an extended period.

Eastern India will also be impacted by active meteorological phenomena. West Bengal and Sikkim are forecast to receive widespread rainfall for seven days, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30–50 kmph. Thundersqualls, with wind speeds up to 70 kmph, are expected on select days. Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha will experience scattered rainfall, thunderstorms, and sporadic hailstorms, especially in the early part of the forecast period.

North and Central India: A Mix of Storms and Heat

Northwest India is set for weather changes over the next couple of days. Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are likely to receive rain and snowfall until May 6, which could affect mountain routes, highways, and trekking sites. In the plains, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh may experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds on various days.

Central India will see isolated rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in the coming days. However, heatwaves are expected to persist in parts of Vidarbha and Rajasthan, contrasting with the heavy rain in other regions.

Southern India Stays Active, But Briefly

Apart from Bengaluru, other southern states—including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh—are forecast to receive isolated showers with thundershowers and gusty winds until early May. Tamil Nadu and Kerala may continue to receive heavy rain until May 2, with isolated thundersqualls possible along the east coast. Unlike Bengaluru, rainfall in southern peninsular India is predicted to decline from May 3, with more isolated showers and prolonged dry spells. Coastal Karnataka is expected to see a significant reduction in rainfall after the initial rains.

Temperature Trends and Evolving Weather Systems

The IMD report highlights temperature trends across the country. Northwest India will experience a rise in daytime temperatures until May 2, followed by a drop of 3–5°C from May 3 to May 6. Central India may see a slight fall in temperatures before stabilizing, while other parts of the country will remain largely unchanged.

Travelers are advised to plan carefully. Bengaluru may witness showers with winds and hail, while Northeast and East India could face disruptions from heavy rainfall, waterlogging, and thundersqualls. Hill areas in North India might be affected by bad weather, and sudden storms could disrupt Central India amid rising temperatures.
