Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) recorded a maximum temperature of 38.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday, marking the third highest April temperature in its history. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the city is experiencing heatwave conditions, with temperatures soaring above normal.
Record-Breaking Heat
The previous highest April temperatures at the airport were 38.6°C on April 2, 2016, and 38.3°C on April 28, 2018. Thursday's reading surpassed the April average by over 5 degrees, intensifying discomfort for residents and travelers. The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, for the next two days.
Impact on Daily Life
The extreme heat has led to increased demand for cooling appliances and water supplies. Commuters at the airport reported feeling exhausted due to the high temperatures. Health officials advise staying hydrated and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours.
Weather Forecast
According to the IMD, Bengaluru is likely to see similar temperatures on Friday, with a slight possibility of relief over the weekend. The department attributes the heatwave to a combination of clear skies, dry winds, and the absence of pre-monsoon showers.
This comes as several parts of India are reeling under intense heat, with temperatures crossing 40°C in many regions. Climate experts warn that such extreme weather events may become more frequent due to global warming.
