An avalanche hit the Srinagar-Ladakh highway near the Zojila pass on Tuesday, damaging nine vehicles. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the area was cleared of traffic prior to the incident. The highway has been closed for vehicular movement due to the avalanche and subsequent snow clearance operations.
Details of the Incident
The avalanche occurred in the early morning hours, burying a section of the road under snow and debris. The vehicles, mostly trucks and cars, were caught in the avalanche but all occupants were rescued safely. Authorities have launched a clearance operation to restore the highway, which is a vital link connecting the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh.
Impact on Traffic
Due to the avalanche, the highway has been shut down, stranding several vehicles on both sides. Traffic officials have advised commuters to avoid travel until further notice. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working to clear the snow and reopen the road at the earliest.
This is the second avalanche on the highway this month, highlighting the risks of travel in the region during winter. The Zojila pass, located at an altitude of 11,578 feet, is prone to avalanches and heavy snowfall, often disrupting connectivity.
