An avalanche hit the Srinagar-Leh National Highway near the Zojila pass on Monday, causing significant disruption to traffic. The incident occurred in the early hours, blocking the strategic road that connects the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh. Several vehicles, including trucks and passenger cars, were stranded on either side of the avalanche site.
Rescue and Clearance Operations Underway
Local authorities, including the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, swiftly responded to the situation. Teams of workers with heavy machinery have been deployed to clear the snow and debris from the highway. Officials stated that efforts are being made to restore traffic at the earliest, but adverse weather conditions are hampering progress.
Impact on Travelers
Dozens of travelers have been stuck in the cold for several hours. Many are being provided with food and shelter at nearby facilities. The administration has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel on the highway until further notice.
The Srinagar-Leh Highway is a vital lifeline for Ladakh, especially during the winter months when it is the only road link. Avalanches and landslides are common in the Zojila region, often leading to temporary closures.
