30 Years of Aerial Excellence: IAF’s Suryakiran Aerobatic Team
The Indian Air Force’s Suryakiran Aerobatic Team has completed three decades of breathtaking performances, marked by over 800 air shows in 72 cities and multiple foreign nations. From tricolour streaks to precision flying metres apart, the team remains a symbol of India’s aerial prowess.
Origins and Legacy
Formed in 1996 at Air Force Station Bidar in Karnataka, Suryakiran was created to serve as the public face of the IAF, showcasing elite flying skills. Over the years, the team has become one of Asia’s most recognised aerobatic units, flying the iconic red-and-white Hawk Mk-132 advanced jet trainers.
Precision and Manoeuvres
Pilots perform high-speed manoeuvres while flying just five metres apart, enduring up to 6–7G forces. Their repertoire includes loops, barrel rolls, bomb bursts, heart formations, and synchronized crossovers, all executed with split-second timing and teamwork.
Global Ambassadors
Dubbed India’s “air ambassadors,” the team has represented the country in Sri Lanka, UAE, Singapore, Thailand, and Myanmar. Their performances inspire youth, showcase professionalism, and strengthen public connection with the IAF.
Motto and Identity
Operating under No. 52 Squadron ‘The Sharks,’ Suryakiran’s motto, ‘Sadaiva Sarvottama’ (Always The Best), reflects a culture of discipline, precision, and excellence. Even after 30 years, the team remains a powerful symbol of the Indian Air Force’s skill and national pride.
