SUV seized for chasing endangered Tibetan Gazelle in Ladakh

The Wildlife Protection Department in Ladakh seized an SUV on June 20, 2026, after it was used to chase an endangered Tibetan Gazelle in the high-altitude region. The incident occurred near the Hanle area, a known habitat for the species.

SUV confiscated for wildlife harassment

According to officials, the vehicle was intercepted following a tip-off from local villagers who reported the illegal activity. The driver and occupants fled the scene, leaving the SUV behind. The Tibetan Gazelle, also known as the Goa antelope, is listed as endangered under the IUCN Red List and is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

"This is a serious offense. Chasing wildlife with vehicles causes extreme stress and can lead to injury or death of the animals," said a Wildlife Department spokesperson. The SUV has been impounded, and a case has been registered under relevant wildlife laws. Efforts are underway to identify the perpetrators.

Conservation efforts in Ladakh

Ladakh is home to several rare species, including the snow leopard and the Tibetan antelope. The Tibetan Gazelle population has been declining due to habitat loss and poaching. In recent years, the government has increased patrolling and installed checkpoints to curb wildlife crimes. Locals have been encouraged to report suspicious activities.

The seizure sends a strong message that wildlife harassment will not be tolerated. The vehicle may be auctioned or used for conservation purposes if unclaimed.
